Don Nichol
PEN PORTRAIT:
Don first became involved in the Ecumaniacs in 2000 when his eldest daughter
Laura joined the cast and needed a taxi service to and from rehearsals!
Originally known as "Lap-top Man", Don took the opportunity to finish off work
whilst waiting for Laura to finish. Before long he was laughing before the punch
line had been delivered and he knew the pantomime better than some of the cast!
Over the next few years Don became well acquainted with the group and we were
soon nagging him to join. He said that work commitments were too great at the
time but he continued to attend the last quarter of an hour of each rehearsal.
After much badgering from the group, and after he became a science technician at
St Mary Redcliffe School, Don was finally recruited to work backstage in 2005.
He began his career by shifting scenery and turning the candle on and off in
"Babes in the Wood" and hasn't looked back since! In 2006 Don was the Chief
Curtain Puller and has since been promoted to Stage Manager which has involved
painting scenery, organising and showing off his creative skills by building the
rock seen in Aladdin.
Although Don prefers to keep his talents to backstage jobs, he often stands in
for cast members during rehearsals, where he shows a definite flair for ad
libbing and making people laugh. So who knows - watch this space and maybe soon
he will be in the spotlight!
